Overtime Sports Talk Show: UPDATE

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BALTIMORE RAVENS..I know, I know the Superbowl was three weeks ago. I’m late, but the Ravens get to reign as NFL Champs for at least another 49 weeks.

Baltimore-Ravens-Super-Bowl-Victory-parade_1_1

It was a great NFL 2012 season, the rookies showed us that they belong, the mobile QB is back on the scene, defenses were left with dust in their mouths and teams that were in the cellar for years look to have promise in the near future. We watched Superbowl commercials, the Senior Bowl and the surprisingly entertaining Pro Bowl lead to the NFL HONORS saw Robert Griffin III capture NFL Rookie of the Year and Adrian Peterson the best player in the game capture NFL MVP.

RG3 Honors

Now the work begins for the 2013 season starting with the NFL Combine.  300 top prospects have been invited to participate in their one and only interview.  This will be their opportunity to impress NFL Scouts, Coaches and General Managers.  Only a select few with be selected by an NFL franchise in April at the NFL Draft so they better make the best of it.  Leading candidates this year are Geno Smith QB WV, Chance Warmack OG Alabama, Luke Joeckel OT Texas A&M and Barkevious Mingo DE LSU.

The NFL Draft is April 25 – 27 at primetime.  The draft has been exciting the last few years.  I look forward to seeing the new players make an impact as they do each year.

Many of you have emailed and tweeted, “Where’s the show?”.  Well after completing two NFL seasons and an NBA season, I decided to scale back the show a bit.  The weekly schedule was fun but very demanding on my full-time schedule.  The Overtime Sports Talk Show will return in April.  We will continue to have weekly shows during the NFL season, but only have broadcast once a month during the off-season to cover stories of interest, ie NBA playoff & MLB season.  I appreciate everyone’s support the last two years.  I will dedicate more time to the blog during the sporting news cycles.  Sports in one of my favorite hobbies and talking about it with the fellas makes it fun, rivalries and all.  If anyone has suggestions for a show or would like to submit stories for the blog please contact me via email at overtime.talk@gmail.com.

Story of Manti Te’o girlfriend a hoax

ESPN.com news services

manti-teo-heisman

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame says a story about Manti Te’o‘s girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the Discover BCS National Championship, turned out to be a hoax apparently perpetrated against the linebacker.

The university issued a news release Wednesday after Deadspin.com reported it could find no record of Lennay Kekua existing.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a news conference Wednesday night that coaches were informed by Te’o and his parents on Dec. 26 that Te’o had been the victim of what appeared to be a hoax. Someone using a fictitious name “apparently ingratiated herself” with Te’o, the school said, then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had died of leukemia.

“On the morning of Dec. 26, very early morning, Manti called his coaches to inform them that while he was in attendance at the ESPN awards show in Orlando, he received a phone call from a number he recognized as having been that he associated with Lennay Kekua,” Swarbrick said. “When he answered it, it was a person whose voice sounded like the same person he had talked to, who told him that she was, in fact, not dead. Manti was very unnerved by that, as you might imagine.”

Swarbrick said that, based on a report from an investigative firm hired by the school, he believes Te’o was duped into an online relationship with a woman whose death was then faked by the perpetrators of the hoax.

“I want to stress, as someone who has probably been as engaged in this as anyone in the past couple of weeks, that nothing about what I have learned has shaken my faith in Manti Te’o one iota,” Swarbrick said Wednesday night.

On Sept. 12, Te’o learned his 72-year-old grandmother, Annette Santiago, had died. Te’o said he was told just six hours later that Kekua had lost her battle with leukemia.

After Notre Dame’s 20-3 win over Michigan State on Sept. 15, Teo said:

“My family and my girlfriend’s family have received so much love and support from the Notre Dame family. Michigan State fans showed some love. And it goes to show that people understand that football is just a game, and it’s a game that we play, and we have fun doing it. But at the end of the day, what matters is the people who are around you, and family. I appreciate all the love and support that everybody’s given my family and my girlfriend’s family.”

He was asked again about his girlfriend on Jan. 3 prior to the BCS title game, saying: “This team is very special to me, and the guys on it have always been there for me, through the good times and the bad times. I rarely have a quiet time to myself because I always have somebody calling me, asking, ‘Do you want to go to the movies?’ Coach is always calling me asking me, ‘Are you OK? Do you need anything?’ “

According to Deadspin, the only photos that have been found online that identified Kekua are actually pictures of another 22-year-old woman. That woman, not named in the report, told Deadspin one of those photos likely was shared by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.

Friends and relatives of Tuiasosopo, a high school classmate of the 22-year-old woman, told Deadspin they believe Tuiasosopo created Kekua. Kekua does not have a death certificate, Deadspin reported. Stanford, where she reportedly went to school, has no record of anybody by that name.

Swarbrick said he met with Te’o on Dec. 27, the day after Te’o received the call, on the Notre Dame campus for “about an hour and 45 minutes.” The two met again on Dec. 28 before Swarbrick took the information and “shared it with other leaders in the university for a deliberation as to next steps, what we should do.”

“The decision was made to engage an independent investigative firm to see if they could determine what was the nature of what increasingly appeared to us to be a sophisticated (case),” Swarbrick said Wednesday.

A Notre Dame source told ESPN he believes Te’o was not involved. But a friend of Tuiasosopo told Deadspin he was “80 percent sure” that Te’o participated and did so with publicity in mind.

According to the Deadspin report, Te’o and Tuiasosopo have been in contact via Twitter, including exchanging several friendly messages last summer.

Te’o issued a statement Wednesday afternoon:

“This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

“To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

“It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. “I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. “In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

“Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I’m looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft.”

Te’o was a Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing second in the voting, and led Notre Dame to its first appearance in the BCS championship.

In an interview with ESPN for “College GameDay” on Oct. 2, Te’o said Kekua’s last words to him were “I love you.” He also said that she was “the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met.”

Swarbrick said Te’o never met Kekua in person.

“What I will tell you, this was exclusively an online relationship,” he said.

Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011.

“This was before her and Manti,” Mauia said Wednesday evening. “I don’t think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was — I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa.”

Mauia said Tuiasosopo — whom Mauia believes is Kekua’s cousin — introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an “after-party” for all of the athletes involved in the camp.

“She was tall,” he said. “Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model … “

When reached by ESPN.com on Wednesday night, former University of Washington and NFL quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo acknowledged that he is a cousin of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo but said he never had met or heard of Kekua.

Mauia said it is his understanding that Kekua’s mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he’d never met her mother. When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said: “No, she is real.”

Te’o is training in preparation for the NFL draft at the IMG Institute in Bradenton, Fla. He is No. 8 on Mel Kiper’s latest draft board.

Information from The Associated Press, ESPN.com’s Gene Wojciechowski, Matt Fortuna, Ted Miller and Mike Fish was included in this report.

LINE: NE -9.0

I have to place a realistic spin on my pick for the Superbowl this year, I know I will recieve a whole lot of flack over this but my wish is for the Atlanta Falcons vs Baltimore Ravens play for the Superbowl. I had picked the Ravens to win the Superbowl over the Saints in September. But after watching all of the teams play leading to this point I am going to have to go with San Francisco vs New England, with the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS winning Superbowl XLVII. Tom Brady and the Patriots are just too strong at this point, they have found a running game. Their defense is stonger than last year and frankly neither Atlanta or the 49ers will be able to stop them. I will be rooting for Baltimore to beat New England just because. If we have a Harbaugh brother Superbowl, I’d give the advantage to the Ravens. If the 49ers win this thing I will puke in my mouth..just kidding, you have to like the change at the QB position from Smith to Kaepernick. It may have been the move of the season. The Overtime Sports Talk Show will do a full wrap up of the Conference Championship games and preview Superbowl XLVII on January 21, 2013 at 7:45pm.

THE 2012 NFL PLAYOFFS ARE SET; BLACK MONDAY, FIRINGS

NFL head coach tracker: Ax falls fast on Black Monday

By Gregg Rosenthal, Around The League editor NFL.com

Black Monday has arrived, and it has brought a lot of change and bad news for many coaches and general managers around the NFL.

We’ll have all the big moves covered on Around the League, and this page will be a one-stop shop for links to all the latest news.

Here’s what we know right now

Firings

Buffalo Bills: Coach Chan Gailey was let go after three seasons that went nowhere in Buffalo. The defense and quarterback play never improved. It’s unclear if general manager Buddy Nix will remain.

Chicago Bears: In the first mild surprise of the day, coach Lovie Smith was fired after three playoff appearances in nine years, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported. General manager Phil Emery took the job last year and will hire his own man.

Cleveland Browns: The team announced Monday morning that coach Pat Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert are both out. They never had much of a chance once new owner Jimmy Haslam bought the team.

Kansas City Chiefs: Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt announced the team has parted ways with coach Romeo Crennel. The team said it has not made a final decision about GM Scott Pioli’s status. NFL.com’s Steve Wyche reported Sunday that the Chiefs are expected to retain Pioli despite a disastrous season.

Philadelphia Eagles: Owner Jeffrey Lurie confirmed Monday morning that coach Andy Reid is out after 14 seasons in Philadelphia. The Eagles won’t waste any time starting a coaching search.

Bears fire Lovie Smith after again missing playoffs
Jets jettison GM Tannenbaum; Ryan will stay
Bills relieve Gailey of head-coaching duties
Chiefs let Crennel go; no final word on GM Pioli
Browns fire coach Shurmur, GM Heckert
Eagles finally make Reid’s firing official
Jaguars end Gene Smith’s four-year run as GM
Panthers, Titans’ decisions could take time
Cardinals brass to meet with Whisenhunt

Up in the air

Arizona Cardinals
Ken Whisenhunt took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl not so long ago, but he has struggled to find anything resembling offensive consistency since. Whether it’s personnel problems or Whisenhunt’s coaching that is up for debate, he certainly has had a big say in the Cardinals‘ quarterback decisions.

Chances for a change: Stronger than you think. Defensive coordinator Ray Horton and former Cardinals assistant Todd Haley are two potential hires with whom the Bidwill family feels comfortable. NFL.com’s Albert Breer reported that Whisenhunt and general manager Rod Graves will meet with team president Michael Bidwill on Monday morning.
Carolina Panthers

Ron Rivera has struggled to win close games during his tenure and isn’t a natural in game management. A four-game winning streak to end the season could save his job, but the Panthers will hire a new GM after the season.

Chances of a change: Strong. NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported Sunday that Rivera is likely to lose his job. Multiple reports in Carolina suggest no final decision will be made Monday. Lombardi believes the next GM will decide Rivera’s fate.
Detroit Lions

Jim Schwartz and GM Martin Mayhew pulled off one of the best rebuilding efforts of all time after taking over the 0-16 Lions. And then the bottom fell out for a talented roster this year.

Chances of a change: Growing. Multiple outlets said earlier in the week that Schwartz was safe, but ESPN reported Sunday that Lions ownership is so disturbed with the team’s culture, it could make a change. Schwartz is signed through 2015, but that might not matter.

Mike Mularkey was hired just last year, but his boss, GM Gene Smith, was fired Monday morning. Mularkey wasn’t able to develop young quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Chances of a change: Good. Mularkey told players in a team meeting that he’s still the head coach after talking with the owner Thursday and Monday, Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer reported. But Mularkey’s fate ultimately will be decided by the next GM. Mularkey will have to wait and see.

Safe

Dallas CowboysCowboys owner Jerry Jones intimated throughout the process that he hasn’t even thought about changing head coaches. Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer first reported that coach Jason Garrett was safe two weeks ago. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that Garrett could be asked to hire an offensive coordinator.

New York Jets: The Jets announced that GM Mike Tannenbaum was let go Monday morning. But they also announced Rex Ryan will stay on as coach. It’s an awkward arrangement for whomever the Jets hire to run the personnel department.

Tennessee Titans: The Tennessean reported Monday that coach Mike Munchak will keep his job despite a 6-10 record. Personnel executive Mike Reinfeldt is out, though.
